South Central Modern Language Association (SCMLA) will devote two sessions in French for its 60th gathering of the South Central MLA community of teachers and scholars in beautiful Hot Springs, Arkansas (October 30-November 1, 2003).

The theme of the convention "Communities" encourages proposals on the history, imagination, practice and representation of communities in language, literature and culture.

Topics may include portrayals of community in literary and non-literary texts as well as in film and other visual medium; community in relation to gender, sexuality, religion, race and/or ethnicity; linguistic communities; academic, professional, and classroom communities; community and tradition/communities in transition; hybrid and multicultural French-speaking communities; utopian communities; communities of writers and artists (e.g. movements, circles, etc); the role of literature and the humanities in fostering, shaping and sustaining French-speaking communities. Any genre (drama, children's literature, poetry and novels)will be considered.
