Cet ouvrage se focalise sur les représentations culturelles africaines du massacre de Thiaroye (1944), la mutinerie de soldats africains durement réprimée par l’armée française coloniale. En prenant en compte les contextes de production des œuvres représentant l’événement, et en accordant une attention particulière à leurs stratégies stylistiques, rhétoriques, textuelles et filmiques, l’étude vise à comprendre comment et pourquoi chaque auteur (Senghor, Keita, Doumbi-Fakoly, Sembene, Diop, Rachid Bouchareb, Faye) (ré-)interprète les événements de Thiaroye. Il s’agit également de constituer une histoire de ces représentations, en examinant le rôle spécifique qu’elles jouent dans la période où elles ont été produites (de 1944 à 2004). L’étude souligne les liens intertextuels entre ces poèmes, pièces de théâtre, romans et films, plaide pour la complémentarité entre récits historiographiques et représentations culturelles de l’événement, et examine comment, tout en expliquant pourquoi, l’interprétation des événements fluctue au cours du temps.
