ROYAL HOLLOWAY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON
Department of Drama and Theatre
Post-Doctoral Research Assistant
Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Assistant in the department of Drama and Theatre. The project is for three years with the aim to increase knowledge and understanding of all aspects of theatre in France since 1968.
Starting from the political events of 1968, this project explores 'crJation collective', relations between playwrights, companies, directors and designers, between national cultural policy and artistic achievement. It will also assess the significance of international influences new, image-based and physically expressive forms of theatre and the growing opportunities for writers in theatre since 1981.
The main responsibilities of the post will be to collect data on all plays and performances in all major professional theatres in France, with publication and performance dates and details, between 1968 and 2000. You will read the majority of these plays, where texts exist, write short digests of them and log the information gathered on an electronic database for easy retrieval. In addition you will collect unpublished play scripts, promptbooks, programmes, photographs, videos, publicity materials, etc. and will have some input in to the structure of the book to be published by Editions Champion.
The person appointed will be expected to live in Paris for the three years of the project. The project grant includes travel allowances for research trips inside France and for regular return visits to London to discuss progress with the Principal Investigator. A laptop will be provided.
Your doctorate does not necessarily have to be in Modern French Theatre, although that would be an advantage. Previous experience of work in France and in French archives would also be an advantage.
Salary will be on the RA1A scale at £22,604 p.a. (inclusive) with an incremental progression in each of years two and three.
