Second Annual FHIS Conference for Graduate Students in French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese Literature and Linguistics

CALL FOR PAPERS – Re/Reading(s)

On behalf of the graduate students of the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies, we are pleased to announce the second annual Graduate Student Conference for Romance Languages and Literatures, to be held September 28th, 2007 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver : Re/Reading(s).

The aim of this conference is to explore the multiple understandings of reading in an interdisciplinary context. The act of reading is fundamental to our work as students of languages and literatures and begins with the first meeting of the text (be it a novel, a poem, visual art, speech or dialect), often extending far beyond simple individual interpretation into the larger scope of social, cultural, and theoretical implications. The text is thus infused with still more meanings, encouraging a potentially infinite process of questioning and discovery.
Students currently enrolled in a graduate program in the fields of linguistic and literary studies in French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese are invited to submit abstracts for consideration.

Proposals may address, but are not restricted to, the following topics :

-reading as interpretation
-the multiple levels of reading
-reading in translation
-the role of the reader
-reading as postcolonial or postmodern practice
-intertextuality
-the starting point of the text
-the importance of reading in society
-reading as expectation
-(re-)reading as memory

Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes (8-10 pages MLA style) and may be in any of the above-mentioned languages or in English.
Please send a 200-word abstract, in English, in electronic format with your name, affiliation and contact information (including e-mail), either as an attachment in Rich Text format or in the body of your e-mail to fhis.conference(at)yahoo.ca. Abstracts must be received no later than March 31, 2007; however, early submisssions are recommended.

We will notify successful submissions by e-mail.
