APPEL A CONTRIBUTION

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Lev Shestov Journal - Special Issue: « Rachel Bespaloff and existential philosophy ».

The editors of the Lev Shestov Journal (University of Glasgow) invite contributions to the forthcoming special issue (nr. 8, 2008) devoted to « Rachel Bespaloff and existential philosophy ». This issue will gather documents, correspondence and critical studies meant to shed light on the role played by Rachel Bespaloff (1895-1949) in the evolution of existential thought. To what extent does her writing (including articles and volumes such as : « Léon Chestov devant Nietzsche », « Le monde du condamné à mort », Cheminements et carrefours and De l'Iliade) reflect a critical legacy or a radical departure in relation to Shestov's thought ? Can Bespaloff's and Shestov's accounts of the existential confrontation with the problem of evil be said to converge or do they significantly differ ? The editors wish to encourage both literary and philosophical approaches to Bespaloff's and Shestov's critique of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard. However contributors may choose to focus on a range of equally relevant topics including : Shestov's and Bespaloff's interpretations of Jewish prophetic thought, the critical function of anxiety, the relationship to Albert Camus and his critique of Shestov's philosophy in The Myth of Sysiphus, the analysis of the concept of temporality, the relationship to Heidegger's philosophy, and the exchanges with a number of contemporary thinkers such as Jean Wahl, Gabriel Marcel, Jean Grenier, Benjamin Fondane, Jean-Paul Sartre. Proposals may also refer to the role of other intellectuals of the period (Daniel Halévy, le Père Fessard, and Boris de Schloezer) in the dissemination of existential thought.

The issue editors are Ramona Fotiade and Olivier Salazar-Ferrer.

Please post or e-mail the title and short outline of your proposal (in English or in French) before the 25th July 2008 to the address below. Selected contributions (up to 3,000 words) will have to be submitted for publication no later than the 15th September.
