Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Exeter:

AHRC project Citation and Allusion in the Late Medieval French Chanson and Motet

Post-doctoral Research Fellow
We are seeking to appoint a post-doctoral fellow to work for 3 years on a new AHRC funded interdisciplinary project on late-medieval French music and poetry, led by Dr Yolanda Plumley. The project, 'Citation and Allusion in the Late Medieval French Chanson and Motet', seeks to define the extent and nature of citational practice in 14th-century French music and lyric poetry. It will analyse the significance of this phenomenon for our understanding of a range of issues relating not only to musical composition of the late Middle Ages but also to poetic activity and social attitudes and practices.

The post-doctoral fellow will work at the interface between the musical and poetic repertories, focussing particularly on the lyric texts (i.e., with and without music). The successful candidate will play a leading role in developing a searchable database of lyrics under the guidance of the Project Technician and the Project Leader (training in the relevant software will be provided). S/he will also research and publish on subjects relating to the project theme, assist in the organisation of workshops and a conference, and co-edit a volume of essays.

S/he should have completed a PhD in a relevant area in the fields of either medieval French literature or medieval Music by September 2006. Ideally, s/he will have some expertise in both the literature and music of the period. S/he should possess the requisite skills to be able to work with middle French texts and to transcribe French lyrics from original sources. S/he will need to be well-organised, self-motivated, independent and have an ability to work as part of a team.

Salary will be Research 1A point 6 (pay award pending).

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Yolanda Plumley, Centre for Medieval Studies, email: y.m.plumley@ex.ac.uk.
