Picasso, his Poetry and Poetics. International Conference

Overshadowed by his magnificent and internationally rewarded art, Picasso created literature: poems, prose, plays. The writing painter is usually not taken seriously, but Picasso did not write private journals. From the beginning, he had the idea to publish his poems in a book that would have been a work of art between painting and writing (he could not realize this project before his death, cf. A. Michaël 2008, p. 33). The many books Picasso illustrated tell a story of his deep relation to the written word (Balzac, Góngora, de Rojas, Ovid, etc.). His own manuscripts show, that this relationship is not only a graphical and pictorial, but also a literary search for his own kind of poetics. The latter would be the hypothesis of the conference:

The painter Picasso became an author of poetry (prose and plays) not by accident, personal crisis or self-discovery, but in the context of a serious literary project, placed in a literary tradition and history.


Obviously one cannot separate the writer from the painter and it will be necessary to have a look on both sides while examining the texts. The conference tries to combine the point of views or art history, literature and linguistics. To get an idea of the position and significance of Picasso's writing in the history of literature it is also necessary to compare his work to his literary models (like Góngora, but also Apollinaire) and to other writing artists like Frida Kahlo or Salvador Dalí.


When Picasso wrote most of his works in 1935-1941 and after the war 1947 (his second play Les quatre petites filles), he was part of the Parisian intelligentsia and quasi-bohemian society. In the middle of occupation (1944) they staged in the private rooms of Michel Leiris the play Le désir attrapé par la queue written by Picasso (1941) and with Simone de Beauvoir, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Jacques Lacan, Cecile Eluard, Louise Leiris, Zanie Aubier, Valentine Hugo, Dora Maar, Jean Aubier, Raymond Queneau, Jacques Bost und Pierre Reverdy as actors and participants. This little anecdote shows, that Picasso did not write just for himself, but from the beginning started to reed own texts to close friends and critically followed the literary avant-garde like the surrealist group. André Breton was the first who published some of Picasso's early texts in his article “Picasso poète” in the journal Cahiers d'art 1936. The relationship to Surrealism has to be discussed not only on the basis of biographical dates, but also regarding the texts themselves.
The returning themes in Picasso's writings are the principal questions he searched for like Minotaure in his labyrinth – therefore it makes no wonder that they return also in his paintings, but in a completely different way of how to express himself. Similar to his paintings Picasso works in series and processes and the result is a certain tension between painting and poetry.
