The French Department at the University of Sheffield offers an exciting and broad range of PhD supervision possibilities for prospective doctoral students. We have specialists in Feminist & Gender Studies, Film Studies, Sociology, Cultural History & Popular Culture, Theatre, Poetry & Music, Contemporary Visual Arts, Life Writing, Postcolonial Studies, Literature (from Medieval through the 18th and 19th centuries to date) and History (particularly French Revolution, the Nazi Occupation of France & the Third and Fifth Republics). Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission for the 2015-2016 academic year.

There are two main funding schemes open to doctoral applicants:

White Rose College of Arts & Humanities/AHRC

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Sheffield is inviting applications for PhD studentships in arts and humanities subjects through the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities (WRoCAH) Doctoral Training Partnership. Details of the Scheme and how to apply can be found at this link.

Deadline for applications to WRoCAH: midnight on Monday 2nd February 2015

Students applying for doctoral study through WRoCAH may wish to attend workshops about the scheme on 3rd and 10th December at the University of Sheffield. Please contact Caroline Wordley c.wordley@sheffield.ac.uk for further details.

Faculty and University Funding

The Faculty of Arts offers a variety of Scholarships. Details of Faculty and University doctoral awards and about how to apply can be found at the following link http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/scholarships/uk under the listings for each scholarship scheme.

Faculty Scholarship applications deadline: Noon 3rd February 2015

Department of French

The French Department is itself funding a 3 year PhD scholarship. The Dorothy Tingle Bequest Scholarship has an annual value of £8,000 comprising fees and subsistence. This award is open to candidates in any area of French/Francophone studies. Candidates are encouraged to apply for this award at the same time as applying for the Faculty and WRoCAH awards.

Candidates must apply for a place on the Department's PhD programme (as per the instructions above) and in their covering letter state that they wish to be considered for the Dorothy Tingle Award. The closing date is the same as that for Faculty awards: Noon 3 February 2015.

Postgraduate Open Days
