DESCRIPTION :

The Department of French Literature, Thought and Culture at New York University is recruiting outstanding students for its fully-funded PhD programs.

Our large faculty and eminent visiting professors offer a wide array of interdisciplinary and theory-strong courses focused on French and Francophone literature. cinema, philosophy and culture. Complemented by the rich programing of NYU's Maison Francaise, Center for French Language and Cultures, and Institute for French Studies, and with close ties to NYU Paris where students frequently spend time the department is part of a rich Francophone global network that prepares students for careers in and beyond academia.

Why Study at New York University?

All admitted Ph.D. students receive full fellowships (tuition plus stipend) for at least five years. The amount for 2019-20 is $28,850. Students also receive $5,000 summer funding after years 1, 2, and 3, and can apply for additional summer, travel, and sixth-year funding. Subsidized housing in New York City is available for first-year students. Work with sixteen internationally recognized permanent faculty members, and with eminent visiting professors, who work on a broad spectrum of specializations in all areas of French literature, thought, and culture. Pursue research in all periods (Medieval through contemporary) and in field-defining sub-disciplines, such as Environmental Humanities, Performance Studies (theater. cinema, etc.), and Digital Humanities. Spend time at NYU Paris and other NYU global sites (Shanghai. Abu Dhabi. Florence. etc.) via the NYU Global Research Initiative Program. Strong placement record. Recent PhD graduates now hold tenure-track positions at Columbia University, Texas A&M University, University of Pittsburgh, Amherst College, etc. We also encourage and support students who seek out jobs beyond the academy.
