Call for Papers

Mystery and Detective Fiction
SW/TX PCA Convention
Albuquerque, NM-- Oldtown Sheraton
March 7-10, 2001

The Southwest has birthed many fine writers of detective fiction, authors who use the setting, culture, history, and general ambience of the area to craft police procedurals, cozies, series detective, suspense, thriller and other hybrid forms. Rudolfo Anaya, Mike McGarrity, William Sanders, Bill Crider, Tony Hillerman, and D.R. Meredith spring quickly to mind for having created memorable characters operating in the distinctive setting of the SW. The Mystery and Detective Fiction Section invites papers on all aspects of southwest detective fiction for this convention. That said, I¢d especially like to offer a session on early mystery fiction of the area, focusing on writers who wrote in the early party of the 20th century and whose perspectives offer us useful loci for discussion: Jim Thompson and Todd Downing are Oklahoma examples of °30s writers, but others are waiting to be explored. Another interesting session might be an exploration of how mystery fiction fits within the larger context of western or southwestern fiction. For example, do gender/landscape connections play similar roles in detective fiction as in other western fiction? Because the SW is home to a rich mix of ethnicities, I also especially invite papers on mysteries by or concerning native Americans, Asian Americans, African-Americans, Hispanics, Chicano/as, or Latino/as.

All panelists must be members of the Popular Culture Association and register for the convention. For general information about the conference, including the spectrum of Subject Areas, please visit the SWPCA website:
