About the award

The Department of Modern Languages is offering excellent funding opportunities for exceptional researchers across a range of subjects. We are offering:

• Three AHRC PhD Studentships (open to UK/EU students in French, Russian and Italian only): all tuition fees paid for three years. UK students will also receive an annual maintenance grant for three years. (In 2009/10 this grant was £13,290; the grant for 2010/11 is yet to be announced).
  
• Up to 7 full doctoral fee bursaries (Home/EU rate) supported by an additional £3,000 per year for contribution of up to 270 hours over the three years of funding to undergraduate teaching or other activities supporting teaching or research. UK/EU and International students are eligible for these awards which run over three years.

The Department of Modern Languages is one of the UK's leading centres for teaching and research in French, German, Hispanic, Italian, Russian, Film, and Sexuality and Gender Studies. Our research covers critical theory, culture, history, linguistics and literature, and we have cross-disciplinary strengths in a number of areas, including Linguistics, Film, the Study of Sexuality and Gender and Translation Studies.  Many staff in Modern Languages currently hold awards from Research Councils and similar funding bodies on subjects ranging from Immigrants' Italian, German and Austrian exhibitions since 1995 about the National Socialist past, Obscenity in Renaissance France, to costume-drama films of the 1950s.

Modern Languages welcomes applications for Doctoral research across the full range of our research areas, including for practice-based doctorates in Film and Translation. We also welcome research proposals to be undertaken in collaboration with another department at Exeter (e.g. with English, History, International Relations, etc).

How to Apply

Entry criteria
For study in a language-based subject, students should have near native competence in that language and hold a Masters degree with at least a Merit, or international equivalent, in a languages/ literature based subject. For study in a non language-based or interdisciplinary subject (e.g. Film Studies), students should hold a Masters degree with at least a Merit or international equivalent, in a relevant discipline. For practice-based subjects (e.g. filmmaking), evidence of experience and excellence in practice in will be taken into account alongside academic qualifications.

To be considered for a studentship or bursary, you must apply for PhD study within the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Exeter by 12 March 2010.

All eligible applicants will be considered for all of the awards, which will be made on academic merit. There is no separate application process for funding but to be considered you must submit the following along with your application for study and supporting documentation (which should include two academic references).

• A 500-word outline research proposal identifying research aims and questions, methodology, any required resources and/or sources, and accompanied by a contextual bibliography.
  
• An up to date curriculum vitae.
  
• A 200-word statement indicating reasons for interest in teaching at HE level and details of previous teaching experience.
  
• Additionally, in practice-based subjects (e.g. filmmaking) students may submit one film and a short theoretical/ practical reflective commentary on the film.
