Cet ouvrage collectif  pluridisciplinaire (principalement littérature et géographie) propose à partir de 17 contributions (6 en français et 12 en anglais) de revisiter les milieux ruraux et leurs représentations dans les écritures contemporaines (entendues au sens large, incluant les romans, les chansons, les contes, les films ou les séries télévisées développés à partir de récits..) afin de dessiner un panorama des imaginaires actuels associés à ces espaces et mettre en lumières les "régionalités" émergentes. Plusieurs contextes nationaux sont ainsi abordés (Espagne, Italie, Russie, Liban, Royaume-Uni), mais sont plus particulièrement développés des exemples concernant le Massif central français et l'Amérique du nord francophone (Québec, Acadie).
