The Department of French and Italian of the University of Kansas invites researchers to submit proposals for its annual spring conference to be held on April 9, 2016 in conjunction with Chimères, a peer-reviewed Journal of French & Francophone Literatures and Cultures. Chimères is listed by the MLA Bibliography and is now in its forty-ninth year. Selected papers will be considered for publication in volume 33 of the journal, which will appear in fall 2016. Volume 32 of the journal has just been published in both electronic and traditional format: https://frenchitalian.ku.edu/chimeres. We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker for the conference will be Russell Goulbourne, Professor of French Literature and Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities at King’s College London.

Our open-ended and multidisciplinary conference will explore notions of margins and marginalities in terms of literary, cultural, and historical identities and expressions. How are margins drawn and defined? How are marginalities formed?

Possible topics could include, but are not limited to:

  • Marginalized people/communities
  • Paratext & subtext
  • Marginalia
  • Iconography
  • Exile
  • Alienation
  • Queerness
  • Literary and cultural hinterlands

Papers are invited from any area of French and Francophone studies and may be in English or French. Prospective presenters may submit abstracts of approximately 250 words by January 29, 2016. Please include your name, institution, mailing address, and email address in both your email and on your abstract. Please attach your abstract as a Word document and send it to chimeres@ku.edu and k666r480@ku.edu.
