Literature and the Sacred - ALIF 23 (2003)

"Alif: Journal of Comparative Poetics" invites submissions for its forthcoming thematic issue on "Literature and the Sacred" scheduled to appear as volume 23 in Spring 2003. The issue seeks to publish research papers treating any aspect of the relationship between literary discourses and concepts of the sacred in and across different cultures and epochs. Articles may examine issues such as - but by no means restricted to - the treatments of the sacred in literary texts and traditions, the literary dimensions of sacred texts, the impact of the sacred on the literary imagination, the role of the literary in the sacred experience, and the contestations between the respective projects of literature and the sacred over the constitution of cultural and social norms.

"Alif" is an international peer reviewed journal published annually in the Spring. Articles may be submitted in any of English, Arabic and French, and should generally not exceed 12,500 words. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2002. Authors should initially send two hard copies printed double-spaced and single-sided. Articles should be furnished with endnotes (not footnotes or citations in parentheses) which should contain all the bibliographical apparatus (there should be no separate bibliography).

One copy of the article should be sent to each of:
