Post Title: Lecturer in French

Vacancy Ref. No.: 311212

Location: School of European Languages & Cultures

David Hume Tower, George Square, Edinburgh

Salary: Lecturer A on a scale £20,267 - £24,193 p.a

The Lectureship will be primarily in the field of Francophone Literatures and Cultures, but other specialisms in modern and contemporary French Studies may be considered.

You will be responsible to the Head of School and will teach and examine as required in any of the French Studies subject area courses, as well as undertaking original research for publication. You will also be available for administrative duties as directed by the Head of School.

You must have native or near native spoken and written French and should have a completed PhD and/or other solid evidence of research achievement in the appropriate field and be prepared to teach across the spectrum of activities.

The School was formed in 1998 from the merger of the former departments of French, German and Russian, Hispanic Studies, Italian and Scandinavian Studies. There are thirty seven full time members of the academic staff and numerous Foreign Language Assistants, Language Assistants (specialising in courses for non Arts degrees), part-time tutors as well as a secretarial and administrative support staff of seven. In addition, the School is the home of the Centre for Austrian Studies, the Centre for European Film Studies and the Centre de Recherches Francophones Belges.

French has been a consistently highly-rated department throughout the existence of the RAE and also enjoys very high standing in Quality Assurance terms. The range of subjects offered within the French curriculum is as broad a spectrum as is to be found in any Department of significance and the successful candidate would be expected to contribute in more than one highly specialised area, but excellence in the field of research would be a primary criterion.
