Le Siècle du Roman. Réalisme et Naturalisme dans la Fiction Dixneuvièmiste

Coimbra, 10-12/11/2011; Tormes, 13/11/2011

Théories, problèmes et apories de la représentation réaliste;

Réalisme et Naturalisme : les modèles, le métalangage et les conventions fictionnelles;

Le Roman et ses realia : topographies, figures, simulacres du réel ;

Le Roman et ses discours : détermination idéologique et sociale ;

La figuration mimétique : ontologie et construction du personnage réaliste ;

The Century of Novel. Realism and Naturalism in Nineteenth-Century Fiction

Coimbra, 10-12/11/2011; Tormes, 13/11/2011

The Centro de Literatura Portuguesa and the Fundação Eça de Queiroz are holding an International Conference devoted to the study of the nineteenth-century realist and naturalist fiction. The Sociedad de Literatura Española del Siglo XIX is also collaborating with this event. The conference will take place at the Faculdade de Letras of the University of Coimbra (November 10-12) with a last Session at Tormes (November 13).

Through the reinvention of the novel as the “real life” narrative, nineteenth-century literature has given us one of its most powerful constructions. Therefore, it was during the nineteenth century, namely within the Realist framework, that the novel established itself as the great modern literary genre. Flaubert, Tolstoi, Eça de Queirós, Thomas Hardy, Clarín, Henry James and Theodor Fontane changed our interpretation of the world as well as the way we imagine the other and ourselves. From then on, realism and novel joined hands: despite the autonomous development of both concepts, it is undeniable the congenial relationship between a particular mode of representation and the literary form which became the dominant form of our time. However, the utopia of describing the world just as it is does not erase the imaginative nature of all works of art.

The realist aesthetic protocols have been intensively questioned, which reflects the philosophical debate on the concept of Realism. It is the role of literary criticism to think about the specificity of the realist aesthetic, and to examine the realist and naturalist movements in particular, intertwining that reflection with the analysis of artistic concepts specifically connected to these epochal literary styles, such as fictionality and narrativity. And, when different theories on fiction – such as the theory of ‘possible worlds' or the ‘make-believe' theory – shake the foundations of concepts such as mimesis, verisimilitude and/or evidence, it is important to address current theoretical developments so as to open up new forms of  interpreting nineteenth-century fiction. The re-reading of these texts may shed a new light on the fictional ontology and pragmatics through the clarification of representational processes and strategies.

The following themes for Open Papers are suggested:

Theories, problems and aporias in the realist representation;

Realism and Naturalism: models, metalanguage and fictional protocols;

The novel and its realia: topography, characters and reality configurations;

The novel and its discourse: ideological and social determination;

The mimetic construction: ontology and the realist character;

Reinterpretations: theatrical and audiovisual adaptations (from Théâtre Libre to contemporary adaptations).
