Call for papers

In accordance with the editorial policy of the journal, papers are invited for consideration for publication in a special issue: A New Generation: Sex, Gender and Creativity in Contemporary Womens Writing in French, edited by Gill Rye (Institute of Romance Studies, University of London)

The 1990s saw a new generation of women writers coming to the fore in France, distanced from 1970s feminisms but writing in the shadow of their heritage. This new generation cannot be grouped into a single literary movement yet insistent issues around gender, love and sexuality are emerging. To what extent does writing by women from the second half of the 1990s through to the first years of the new millennium reflect a shift from women as objects (of display, of desire or of fear and fantasy) to women as agents of their own subjectivities as authors, as mothers, as daughters, as lovers? In what ways and in what forms and styles are womens lives and personal relationships being inscribed in womens recent literary creation? What is at stake in these portrayals? What tensions operate on them in these changing times?

Submissions in either English or French (5,000 words maximum, including Endnotes) should be sent to:
