THE JULIETTE S. BENHAMOU MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR FRANCOPHONE STUDIES
THE DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
The Juliette S. Benhamou Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding student with a genuine interest in Francophone Studies who is accepted or enrolled in a graduate program in French within the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Purdue University. The award of at least $5,000 will be provided in addition to a graduate assistantship that includes full tuition remission. (NB: For the purposes of this scholarship, the term "Francophone Studies" is used to denote the literature and culture of French speaking regions outside France, such as North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Québec, and the Antilles.)
Candidates must demonstrate the character traits exemplified by Juliette Benhamou. Preference will be given to applicants who come from a Francophone North African background, but all candidates are welcome and will be carefully considered.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The application consists of an application for graduate study in French in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (including a completed application form, transcripts, letters of recommendation, application fee, Graduate Record Examination scores, and TOEFL scores if appropriate), as well as a presentation in person or by video (which may be transmitted electronically). In the presentation, the candidates should discuss why they wish to pursue graduate studies in French at Purdue, how they became interested in Francophone studies or other topics in French, and in what ways they embody the values exemplified by Juliette S. Benhamou.
For candidates already enrolled in a graduate program in French at Purdue University, the application consists of a letter of intent, a current transcript of graduate work at Purdue, two letters of recommendation, and a presentation in person or by video.
Review of applications will begin January 2 and will continue until a scholarship offer is accepted. Candidates are urged to file their applications and supporting materials as early as possible to allow time for the most careful consideration.
The award will be divided equally between two installments; one installment to be provided in the Fall semester, and one in the Spring semester. The scholarship may be renewed for one additional year provided the recipient continues to meet the eligibility criteria.
