9th International Conference of ACWWS

"Liberatory Poetics in Caribbean Writing: Gender and Nation Re-configurations"

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
May 18 to 23, 2004

This conference hopes to boldly enable a "coming together," a meeting of scholars and writers from the four language areas of the Caribbean (English, French, Spanish, Dutch) to promote a common ground of introspection.  It also hopes to benefit from the location in the Dominican Republic in learning more about its own writers and as well its cultural, social, literary and historical heritage, and in giving recognition to the special creative powers and potential of neighboring nations such as Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The conference inquires into the prevailing progressive narratives of island sovereignties, creolization, gender equality. What do the writers signal about differences or commonalities?  Do they challenge, transform, or help to clarify the paradigms?  How do they respond to their island contradictions?  How do they reach out beyond differences to sister islands, despite differences of language, culture, social manners and behavior, and daily life practices?
