French Studies: Where from, where to?

The Department of French at the University of Bristol is holding a one-day graduate conference on April 30th 2005 with the theme: French Studies: Where from, where to?' Confirmed as the keynote speaker is Professor Charles Forsdick of the University of Liverpool.

We aim to provide a friendly and engaging forum in which current and recent graduate students in French Studies may discuss the question, relevant to all, of the changing face of our discipline. What is changing in our field? What are the implications for the future of French Studies of trends such as interdisciplinarity? Proposals are invited for 15 minute papers, in which speakers will present their research and relate it to these wider issues.

Matters for consideration might include:

Traditional canons vs. marginal works and emerging areas
High vs. low culture
Defining a valid' or relevant' research topic
Changing methods and approaches
Interdisciplinary approaches and the boundaries of French Studies

The day will conclude with a round-table discussion, where participants not giving papers will have the opportunity to contribute 5-minute poster presentations related to their current projects. It is our intention to publish a selection of papers.

Abstracts of no more than 300 words are invited and should be submitted by Friday 11th February 2005, to katherine.shingler@bris.ac.uk or jane.weston@bris.ac.uk, or by post to:
