Filming the Nineteenth Century Novel

Papers addressing filmed adaptations of 19th century novels are invited, from all theoretical perspectives. Books and films both major and less conventional are welcome. What choices confront film-makers in bringing these works to the screen? What features of the novels make them appealing to producers/directors/the public?
