Fictions Present (Symploke)

Call for papers: Symploke, a journal of comparative theory and literature, seeks submissions for its special issue 12.1 with the theme "Fictions Present." The question of the present inflection of fiction is Janus-faced, looking aside to the novels radically changed political, economic, technological circumstances and back to its history of achievement and problems. Can the novel establish itself in the present of global capitalism without abandoning its formal distinctiveness? Does fiction continuing the tradition of modernist innovation have any reality for emergent political groups and cultures? Suggested topics include: the present and representation; fictions medium; global narrative and heteroglossia; the avant garde and postcolonialism; fiction and value. Deadline is 15 May 2003. Send papers to both R.M. Berry, Department of English, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-1580, at rberry@english.fsu.edu and Jeffrey R. Di Leo, School of Arts and Sciences, University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria, TX 77901-5731 at dileoj@uhv.edu. For submission details consult http://www.symploke.org.
