Experiences of Time in Literature

7 - 8 May 2013, Helsinki, Finland

The conference explores different ways in which literature deals with the experience of time. How has the experience of time changed in literary history and how do different genres give expression to experiencing time? How have the three dimensions of time – the past, present and future – been manifested, examined and imagined in literature? A literary work expresses different forms of experiencing time through its characters, narrative strategies and its entire logic of construction. Time is also a central concept in history, philosophy, psychology, physics and other sciences, and the question of experiencing time can be productively theorized and conceptualized in terms that cross disciplinary boundaries. We invite papers on topics that may include but should not be limited to:

● Different ways of experiencing time in literature
● Experiencing, representing and imagining the past, present and future
● Memory, trauma, testimony
● Melancholy and nostalgia
● Periods and demarcations: histories of literature
● Time and temporality in poetry and poetics
● Narrated time, narration time, time in narrative studies

● Temporal paradoxes
