Volume on Gertrude Stein and Europe – Gertrude Stein and French literature
The editors of an essay collection on Gertrude Stein and Europe are looking for a contribution on the reception of Stein's work in French literature. The general aim of the book is to reconsider the European entanglements of Stein's work. Confirmed contributors are both established Stein scholars and young academics. The volume comprises four sections: the place of Stein in early twentieth-century European modernism; the effects of her expat life on her language use; as yet under-studied connections between Stein's work and intellectual/artistic discourses; and the reception of Stein's work in European artistic/literary circles. The final section includes contributions on Stein and 1960s art and on Stein and theatre. The editors feel that an essay on the relation between Stein's work, of which the bulk was written in France, and French literary avant-garde experiment like Oulipo, or a text on the influence of Stein's work (in translation) on contemporary French poets would beautifully complement the other essays.
The deadline for abstracts (400 words) is May 10, and for essays between 5000 and 6000 words 1 September 2010. The editors will take their detailed proposal to a publisher in May and intend the book to appear in the spring of 2011.
