DUDESCRIPTIF

CALL FOR PAPERS

ON DESCRIPTIVE WRITTING

Abstract submission deadline: 1st December 2009

Beingan easily identifiable textual unit, the descriptive paragraph is commonly seenas the selected piece parexcellence. Therefore, it will be studied in this issue as a very specific typeof writing, which entails that it has its own, specific, genesis. PhilippeHamon holds that description 'involves a 'linguistic utopia', that of languageas a nomenclature', capable of providing enclyclopaedic information upon theworld around us. Such ambition implies an often minute preparatory phase, including reading notes, exploratory trips, and letters sent for particulardetails, all of which witnessing to the fact that writing is in progress. Atthe other end of the process, inserting descriptive paragraphs within thenarrative and assigning them boundaries (notably the final one) are cases ofinner conflicts whose marks arevisible in the scenarios or drafts preceding them.

Towhat extent, then, is it possible to isolate the specific marks of the genesisof descriptive writing in a given, writing project? Furthermore, does therelative departure from realism at the beginning of the 20th centurycoincide with a new kind of relationship to description – and, therefore, toits implementation? While description, in the words of Julien Gracq, is thatmoment when 'the world opens up its paths', this issue of Recto/Verso proposes to examine the very paths leading up todescription.
