Deux grands romans canadiens à l'aune des cultures étrangères : Bonheur d'occasion de Gabrielle Roy et Two Solitudes de Hugh MacLennan

DEUX GRANDS ROMANS CANADIENS À L'AUNE DES CULTURES ÉTRANGÈRES

Publiés en 1945 et traversés par les grands thèmes de l'époque — la guerre, la pauvreté, les relations difficiles entre les peuples —, Bonheur d'occasion et Two Solitudes ont remporté des prix prestigieux (le Prix Femina pour Roy, le Prix du Gouverneur général du Canada pour MacLennan et Roy). Vendus à des centaines de milliers d'exemplaires au Canada et aux États-Unis, ces romans ont été traduits en une douzaine de langues (allemand, danois, espagnol, japonais, hollandais, norvégien, roumain, russe, suédois, slovaque, tchèque…).

Comment ces livres ont-il rejoint leurs nouveaux publics? Quels sont les enjeux de la traduction littéraire et des échanges littéraires internationaux? Pour examiner ces questions, ce colloque réunit plus de 35 chercheur(e)s et spécialistes de la traduction provenant de plus de 12 pays.

TWO CANADIANS CLASSICS THROUGH THE INTERCULTURAL PASSAGE

Published in 1945 and grounded in the major themes of the time — war, poverty, the uncertain relations between nations —, Bonheur d'occasion and Two Solitudes won prestigious literary awards for their authors: the Canadian Governor General's Award for both and the French Prix Femina for Roy. Both novels sold hundreds of thousands of copies in Canada and the United States, and were translated into a dozen languages (Czech, Danish, Dutch, German, Japanese, Norwegian, Romanian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Russian…).

How did these books find their way to their new readers? What is at stake in literary translation and international literary exchange? To analyze these questions, this conference brings together over 35 scholars and translation specialists from more than 12 countries.
