Contemporary Algerian Cultures

Call for papers for conference to be held at the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Sheffield (UK), June 5th-7th 2009.

The University of Sheffield (UK) will host an international conference on contemporary Algerian cultures between June 5th-7th 2009. The conference will coincide with a major festival of contemporary Algerian culture, including music, cinema, contemporary visual arts, sport and literature, scheduled to take place in a variety of venues across the city of Sheffield in June 2009.

Professor Benjamin Stora (Professor of History of the Maghreb at the Institut
National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales - INALCO - Paris.

Dr Rabah Soukehal, Strasbourg-based writer and author of Le Roman Algérien de la
langue française and L'Ecrivain de langue française et les pouvoirs en
Algérie.

Abdelkrim Bahloul, film director. Films include Le Soleil assassiné and Le
Voyage à Alger

*** We are pleased to announce that the exhibition of contemporary art from
Algeria will be curated by Kader Attia. ***

The conference will address all aspects of contemporary Algerian culture,
including art, music, media, literature, publishing, theatre, photography,
performance, sport and cinema. The focus will be on cultural production and
identities in Algeria, although proposal for papers engaging with Algerian
diasporic cultures are also welcome. We particularly welcome papers that
explore Berber cultural production and amazighité.

The deadline for submitting proposals is February 28th 2009.

We will accept papers in English and French.

Proposals are sought for papers and also panel sessions.

For individual papers:
Please submit an abstract (approx. 250-300 words) including title, description
and contact information.

For panel proposals:
Please submit a description of the topic to be addressed by the panel and short
abstracts for each of the proposed papers. You should also include contact
details for all panel participants and proposed chair.
