Conflict. Stendhal, the Algerian war, Claude Simon and the Occupation.

The French Department will be hosting a one-day inter-disciplinary conference in French studies on Thursday, September 18, 2003. The conference focuses on the theme of conflict, and speakers will present papers on a range of topics including Stendhal, the Algerian war, Claude Simon and the Occupation.

Due to the generous support of the Society for French Studies we are pleased to be able to offer FREE participation in the one-day Sheffield interdisciplinary Conference in French Studies, entitled 'Conflict', to be held on Thursday 18th  September. Free refreshments will also be available on arrival.

Registration will be possible until Tuesday 16th September. However participants are encouraged to register their interest if possible by Friday 12th to facilitate planning.

There will be an interesting and varied programme of papers as follows:

Session 1:

  • Jeremy Bull (Sheffield): Conflict of interests: individual, community and the critique of work in Jean Giono's early novels.
  • Sarah Donachie (Leeds): Stendhal's 'Battle of the Sexes': Domineering Women and Effeminate Men in Stendhal's Fiction.
  • Honor Aldred (Sheffield): Conflict between integrity and self-preservation: Clément Marot - a Reformist in an Orthodox court.
  • Jonathan Merrison (Exeter): Textual and fictional conflict (or how to spot a mise en abyme) in Claude Simon's 'La Bataille de Pharsale'.


Session 2:


  • Alejandra Ezeta (Georgetown): War violence and psychiatric consequences in French soldiers during the Great War.
  • Sophie Timmerman (Kent): Rejecting the 'invisible war': feminine representation of the Algerian civil war in Leïla Sebbar's 'La jeune fille au balcon'.
  • Myriam El Maizi (Newcastle-upon-Tyne): Écriture de la mémoire/Écriture du devenir dans les écrits de Marguerite Duras.
  • Alick Robertson (Leeds and Sheffield): Legal Conflict: The Vichy government - A legitimate or usurpatory regime?
