COLLOQUE INTERNATIONAL
LE TEXTE LITTÉRAIRE DANS L'ESPACE PUBLIC AU CANADA
Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal
15-16 octobre 2010

-les spécificités et les fonctions du texte littéraire dans l'espace public;
-les modes de présentation du texte littéraire dans l'espace public;
-l'impact artistique et sociologique du texte littéraire dans un espace public;
-les rapports entre le patrimoine bâti et les oeuvres littéraires publiques contemporaines au Canada;
-le processus de création d'oeuvres littéraires vouées à un espace public canadien;

CALL FOR PAPERS

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
LITERARY TEXT IN PUBLIC SPACE IN CANADA
Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal
October 15th-16th, 2010

Text in the public space is traditionally associated with signage and advertising. This limitating custom infers an utilitarian or mercantile relationship towards texts in any collective environment. On the other hand since the second half of the 20th century, one can notice a greater presence of artworks or artistic interventions in the public space. Among these, a significant number integrates original text or elements drawn from world literary heritage. The study of these works would reveal a wide range of style, speech, functions, modalities of integration or mechanisms of reading.

On the occasion of this conference, we wish to question the situation of literary texts registered in a temporary or permanent way in the public space. By approaching the latter as a support for the text, we wish in particular to elicit reflections on the relationship between these works and their readers, initiatives of creation, and diffusion modes related to this type of literary and artistic production. We seek contributions from theoretical, critical, or creative points of view; from professors, artists, researchers, professionals, and graduate and postgraduate students. Among possible fields of inquiry, here are some suggestions:
-specificities and functions of the literary text in the public space;
-displays of the literary text in the public space;
-artistic and sociological impacts of the literary text in a public space;
-connections between heritage buildings and contemporary public literary works in Canada;
-creative process in literary artworks commissioned for public spaces in Canada;
-literary history in Canadian public art.

This conference will offer the opportunity to discuss an often underestimated literary and artistic production, with participants stemming from various disciplines; it will also propose general reflections on the repercussions of literary texts in the public space.

The proposal, in English or in French, must include a summary of 200 words, a brief bio-bibliographic notice, as well as the complete address and phone number of the author. It has to be received by e-mail before April 20th, 2010.
