Anna Langfus: Voices and Silences of the Holocaust

Centennial Conference

October 15-16, 2020, Lublin.

The work of Anna Langfus is not well known in the French literary canon, not even within the genre of Holocaust literature. Nevertheless, as a writer she participated in a major renewal of this genre, which had been mainly testimonial and witness-focused prior to her publications. She is the author of three novels which share a common theme: Le Sel et le soufre (1960) (Salt and SulphurouThe Whole Land Brimstone), Les Bagages de sable (1962) (Bags of Sand ou The Lost Shore), awarded with the Prix Goncourt, and Saute, Barbara (1965), Although nowadays her work is not well known, Langfus is an important author of high literary merit. She experienced the horrors of the Holocaust first-hand as a witness to genocide and a victim of torture and forced flight from the Nazis, but she refused to express her grief through autobiography.  Though fully immersed in the Second World War and the larger history of Europe of her day, Langfus’s novels as well as her theatrical plays remain outside the concentration camps, trying instead to explore the tragedy of those who survived, and what Anna Langfus herself calls “la maladie de la guerre”: the war disease. Told without pathos, suffering seems to be the anonymous and ubiquitous companion of all her characters. The conference will examine, among other issues, the specificity of Langfus’s novels, the reasons that made her turn to fiction, and the modernity of her style of writing, which uses litotes and understatements to achieve genuine aesthetics of silence. Written at a time when an ethos of victimization, repentance, and sometimes Manichaeism was dominant, Langfus’s texts urge us to keep any form of idealization or false consolation at a distance.

This conference, the first dedicated to the works of Anna Langfus (1920-1966), will take place in her native city of Lublin on the occasion of the centennial of her birth. We invite proposals focusing on the specificities of Langfus’s novels and plays, with particular attention to her status as a pioneer in the field of Holocaust literature and the specificity of her personal background and experiences in shaping her work.  Four major areas of reflection are suggested:

Anna Langfus’s work and the main characteristics of her style. These may include, but are not exclusive to, the following themes: the aesthetics of silence, the refusal of Manichaeism, the relationship between history, fiction and testimony, and the “war-disease.”

The reception of Anna Langfus’s work. Anna Langfus’s works were favorably, even enthusiastically acknowledged at the time of their publication, as indicated by her being awarded the Prix Goncourt. As a woman and a survivor, she was nevertheless targeted by numerous critical opinions and stereotypes. We invite contributions focusing on these paradoxical reactions to her works.

Writing on the Holocaust. The purpose of this section will be to situate the place of Anna Langfus in relation to the camp-and-genocide literature of her time. While preference shall be given to comparisons within the francophone space (Anna Langfus and Elie Wiesel, Jean-François Steiner, Piotr Rawicz, Charlotte Delbo, and others), we will also consider proposals focused on non-French language writers such as AharonAppelfeld or Adolf Rudnicki.

The worlds of Anna Langfus. This section will focus on the author’s life and work in the historical, geographic and cultural context, both in Poland (the social and cultural life of Jewish Lublin, the ghettos in occupied Poland, the activities of the Polish underground), and in France.

These four areas serve as suggestions. Other proposals are welcome and they all will be examined according to their merits.
