The symposium on Death in Literature focuses on representations of death and dying in literature. Potential questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to:

  • images and narratives of death, dying and mortality in literature and popular imagination
  • posthumous life in literature
  • playing with death
  • political uses of death images and narratives
  • death and humor
  • aesthetics of death and
  • poetry of mourning

 

Contributions both by researchers and fiction writers are welcome!
 

Deadline for the abstracts: 15 June 2012. Please, submit an abstract (max. 300 words) and the contact information to Outi Hakola (outi.j.hakola@helsinki.fi).


The conference is organized by two programmes hosted by the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS): the HCAS Writer Programme and the Human Mortality project. The aim of the HCAS Writer Programme is to reinforce interaction between research and art by sharing insights and engaging academic researchers and artists in dialogue. The Human Mortality project aims to discuss death, dying and mortality in an interdisciplinary network.
