The School of Modern Languages in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta seeks an early Associate Professor of Arabic language and cultures, modern Arabic literature, or interdisciplinary Middle East Studies, with an established record of program-building in any of these areas, and preference for a secondary concentration in French to begin in August 2017. The candidate’s qualifications should demonstrate merit for a tenured appointment and minimum requirements include (1) the PhD in Arabic or related field, with native or near-native fluency in both Modern Standard Arabic and at least one Arabic dialect; (2) consistent scholarly achievement, with significant peer-reviewed publications; (3) documented evidence of successful teaching, including support for teaching Spoken Arabic alongside MSA, and active engagement with students; and (4) achievements in program/curricular development or in community engagement.

The successful applicant will demonstrate interest in cross-cultural and content-based applied language learning, rooted in a command of contemporary Arabic culture, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Possible areas of specialization include applied language studies, digital media and humanities, modern literature and culture, and Middle East or Mediterranean studies. The candidate will teach courses in Arabic and in his or her areas of specialization, and will also contribute to the academic and research priorities of the School of Modern Languages, which includes globalization, service learning, and language use in professional contexts.

Candidates will submit a statement of interest highlighting how they meet the job requirements, contact information for three references, including at least one that can speak to language proficiency, a current CV, and a published writing sample to arabichire@modlangs.gatech.edu in one single PDF document.
