UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
Assistant Professor of French
The Department of French, Italian and Spanish invites applications at the Assistant Professor level for a limited-term, 18-month position in French Linguistics, effective January 1, 2007. Primary responsibilities will involve teaching and coordinating two half-courses in Teaching French as a Second Language (TFSL), as well as involvement in the use of technology in second-language pedagogy. The professorial teaching load consists of two half-courses per term or the equivalent.
A PhD in French (or ABD) with a specialization in an appropriate field (for example, Second-Language Pedagogy, Second-Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics), research interests in Computer-Assisted Language Learning, an active research agenda, evidence of superior teaching, as well as native or near-native competence in French, are required. Expertise in language assessment and competence in other languages would be assets, as would success in attracting research funds. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with colleagues in other languages at the University of Calgary's Language Research Centre (www.ucalgary.ca/lrc).
The Department offers the BA, MA and Special-Case PhD degrees in French and Spanish, as well as a BA in Italian Studies. In all, approximately 3,000 students take courses in this academic unit. The Language Research Centre, reflecting one of the significant areas of excellence in the University's Academic Plan, involves researchers in education, linguistics and many of the modern languages, and is a focus of intensive interdisciplinary activity. As of September 2006, the Department of French, Italian and Spanish will host an Aula Cervantes, a branch of the Instituto Cervantes, that will provide further opportunities for study, particularly in the area of second-language acquisition in Spanish.
Salary will be commensurate with the level of experience and academic distinction.
Applications should include a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, significant writing samples and evidence of superior teaching effectiveness. Applicants should also arrange for three confidential letters of reference or their placement dossier to be received by the Department in order for their file to be considered. All material should be addressed to Dr. Luis Torres, Head, Department of French, Italian and Spanish, University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 Canada. Fax: (403) 284-3634. E-mail: fishead@ucalgary.ca
Consideration of applications will begin August 18, 2006 and will continue until the position is filled.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
