THE DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH STUDIES
School of Modern Languages, University of Manchester
The Department of French Studies, which was established in 1896,
combines tradition with innovation, and is one of the most popular
for admissions in the UK. The teaching programme, in accordance with
the research interests represented in the Department, is extremely
wide ranging, involving literature from the medieval to the
contemporary period (including comparative literature, childrens
literature and womens writing), and also critical theory, French
thought, post-revolutionary culture and institutions, contemporary
cultural studies, linguistics (especially semantics and pragmatics),
the visual arts and practical theatre. The curriculum as a whole,
but
particularly the language learning programme, is based on a concept
of progressive learning, and the teaching medium is normally French.
The Universitys Language Centre was recently opened, and
collaboration with the Centre and across the School of Modern
Languages is leading to new initiatives in language teaching and
learning. The University operates on the basis of modular degrees
and
teaching is divided between two semesters.
The Department, which is strongly research based, and which was
awarded a 5 in the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise, comprises two
Professors, one Professorial Research Fellow, one Reader, two Senior
Lecturers, and seven Lecturers along with a number of part-time
staff
and four Foreign Language Assistants. The School of Modern
Languages,
of which the Department of French Studies is a constituent member,
is
also currently engaged in a programme of postgraduate recruitment
and
has recently restructured its MA in European Literature and Culture,
in which the Department plays a major part. The Department has taken
a leading role in setting up the new Centre for Interdisciplinary
Research in European and Post-Colonial Cultures, in which
Performance/Film constitutes a research strand. The research
environment is enhanced by financial support available from two
endowed funds and by the excellent holdings of the John Rylands
University Library, both on campus and at Deansgate in the city
centre, the site of the Universitys special collections. The
Department enjoys a close relationship with the Manchester branch of
the Alliance Française, and with the local Délégation Culturelle de
lAmbassade de France.
