Présentation de l'éditeur :

Hanrahan analyses the parlement's representation throughout Voltaire's writings, and calls into question the dominant historiography of extremes that pits Voltaire ‘defender of the oppressed' against ‘self-interested' magistrates. He presents a relationship that was much more nuanced, from which the philosophe emerges as a highly pragmatic figure whose political philosophy was inseparable from his business or humanitarian interests.
