Dans le cadre d'un programme de recherches entrepris par l'équipe ‘Texts, Transmission and Cultural Exchange' soutenu par le PRTLI (2008-2012) et par la Fondation Andrew Mellon, le Moore Institute offre:

Une bourse pour des recherches doctorales portant sur la littérature des voyages - voir la 'version anglaise' ci-dessous pour plus de détails concernant l' équipe et les domaines envisagés. La valeur de la bourses offerte s'élève à €16 000 par an, pour 4 ans (2008-2012), plus frais d'inscription et quelques frais de voyage.

Le dossier de candidature doit comporter :

• un CV détaillé, signalant notamment tous les diplômes et autres qualifications obtenus
• Échantillon de recherche (environ 4000 mots) – soit un article, soit un ou deux extraits (d'un mémoire de maîtrise, par exemple)
• Le nom et adresse d'au moins deux personnes qui accepteront de fournir une lettre de recommandation.

PhD Scholarship in Travel Literaturature

Project background

The project investigates aspects of cultural exchange from 1500 to 1900, focusing on textual production and transmission. During a period of unprecedented travel by traders, diplomats and colonists, Europeans produced a vast body of texts exploring questions of cultural difference. Such documents (whether published or remaining in archives) describe cultural exchange, transmission, conflict and accommodation between Christians and Muslims, Europeans and continental neighbours of different confessional traditions, and New World encounters with ostensibly ‘uncivil' peoples. The ‘Texts, Transmissions and Cultural Exchange' team is currently composed of three members of academic staff in English and French, two Postdoctoral Fellows, and two PhD research students. This project has been awarded funding by the Irish Government under PRTLI round 4 (2008-2012) and is further supported by the Andrew Mellon Foundation (2008-2011).

A position is now open for one PhD research student. The successful candidate will work in an area related to the research team's current projects. These include the following areas: Literature of advice on travel 1500-1900; Consular reportage and travel writing 1660-1800 (emphasis on French); Cross-cultural encounters in the French Mediterranean; Illustrated travel accounts 1650-1850; Travel and networks. Consideration will be given to applications concerning other closely related areas. The doctoral students are supported and mentored by all of the senior researchers.

Funding: €16,000 p.a. for four years (2008-2012) in addition to fees and some travel expenses.

Application Procedure: Applicants should specify the area in which they wish to work, and submit following materials:

• a full CV including all degree and diploma results
• writing sample up to 4000 words. This may be take the form of one long piece (e.g. a minor dissertation for a taught MA course) or two shorter essays (at least one of which should be a graded essay submitted as part of an academic programme
• the names and addresses of at least two academic referees
