Traverser les frontières : l'Allemagne entre exils et explorations

Le CCEAE (Centre Canadien d'Études Allemandes et Européennes) de l'Université de Montréal organise un colloque «Jeunes chercheurs» bilingue (français-anglais) intitulé «Traverser les frontières : l'Allemagne entre exils et explorations», qui se tiendra à Montréal les 7 et 8 novembre 2008. Nous vous invitons à nous faire parvenir vos propositions de communication avant le 15 août 2008.

Ce colloque pluridisciplinaire, qui s'adresse prioritairement aux doctorants et chercheurs postdoctoraux, s'est donné pour objet d'étude les différentes formes de voyages effectués de part et d'autre de la frontière allemande, depuis l'avènement de la République de Weimar jusqu'à nos jours.

L'Allemagne connaît au 20^ème siècle de nombreuses redéfinitions de son espace : à un mouvement d'expansion à travers l'Europe sous le 3^ème Reich, succède un morcellement du territoire à l'issue de la victoire des alliés; la construction du Rideau de Fer, quelques années plus tard, divise la nation pendant 40 ans; enfin, la réunification survenue au tournant des années 1990, jointe à l'ouverture des frontières européennes, suscite de nouvelles formes d'appartenance. Ces réajustements constants de la frontière ont eu, indéniablement, une incidence sur la définition identitaire de la nation allemande. Corrélativement à ce remodelage politique et territorial se dessine une multitude de flux migratoires, de l'exil des Juifs au moment de l'avènement du nazisme, à la traversée du Rideau de fer par les Allemands de l'Est, en passant par la fuite des nazis après la débâcle. Depuis la réunification, ce sont des facteurs économiques qui entraînent l'arrivée massive de nouveaux immigrants en sol allemand.

Il s'agira alors d'étudier, dans une perspective littéraire, artistique, philosophique, sociologique ou historique, le passage des frontières de l'Allemagne, dans un sens ou dans l'autre, afin de repérer les répercussions de ces migrations sur les représentations identitaires de la nation allemande.

Les frontières traversées étant également celles des genres et des médias, nous serons aussi amenés à nous intéresser aux nouvelles formes de récits de voyage développées en Allemagne depuis la République de Weimar, dans le prolongement de la tradition du Bildungsroman ou du roman du Wanderer, en puisant dans un répertoire littéraire, cinématographique, télévisuel ou photographique.

Crossing the borders: Germany between exiles and explorations

Description

The aim of this multidisciplinary symposium, which will bring together essentially PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, is to study the different kinds of travels or journeys through the German borders, from the Weimar Republic until today.

During the 20th century, different historical events contributed to transform the shape of the German territory: the expansion brought about by the imperialistic politics of the Third Reich is followed, at the end of the war, by the division of the country between the Allies. Next, the creation of the Iron Curtain splits up the nation for 40 years. Finally, the German Reunification, the development of the European Union and the redefinition of European citizenship at the end of the century all contribute to redefine the German sense of belonging.

We want to explore the consequences of these constant modifications of borders on the definition of the representations of German identity. Closely linked to these political and territorial transformations are the development of different migration patterns: the flight of the Jews during World War II, or the getaway of the Nazis after the German defeat; the escape of East Germans through the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, or the massive immigration — a response to economical needs — which followed the fall of the Eastern Block.

The aim of this project is to study the different types of crossings of the German borders, either using literary, artistic, philosophic, sociological or historical approaches. We wish to detect the influence of these migrations on the construction of the German national identity, since the Weimar Republic.

The physical crossing of borders is closely linked to the transformation of others borders, of categories, including that of medias and artistic or literary genres. We wish to explore new kinds of travel writings which have been developed in Germany since the Weimar Republic, building on such traditions as the Bildungsroman and the Wanderer novels. Literature, film, television and photography will be considered.

- Genres dealing with border crossings, and the border crossings of genres

- Migrations, exodus and exiles

- Through the Iron Curtain

- An immigrant's perspective

- Films on travels; literary or artistic travel diaries

- Virtual travels: beyond the borders of the reality

- Imaginary travels and personal exiles
