Assistant Professor – French Cultural Studies
Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies

Competition No. -
A10012379

Closing Date -
Oct 30, 2007

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies (MLCS) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor entry level in French Cultural Studies (with a specialization in Quebec Studies preferred). MLCS is particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research includes a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspective with respect to twentieth/twenty-first century issues (such as globalization, environmentalism, Third World, gender, technology, and others). Teaching duties will include language, literature, and culture at undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in an appropriate field, with native proficiency in French preferred, demonstrated research competence, and strong teaching potential. Competence in other related areas such as Translation, Popular Culture, or Media would be an asset. Fluency in another language relative to MLCS would also be an asset. Experience or interest in teaching writing-intensive courses or writing across the curriculum will be considered an asset.
MLCS (http://www.mlcs.ca/) is a highly interdisciplinary department with 30 faculty where 16 languages are taught and literature, culture, applied linguistics, language and cultural studies as well as folklore are all actively pursued. The Department offers undergraduate as well as graduate programs at the MA and PhD levels in several languages, literatures and cultures. This position will both strengthen the French discipline and open the field to new possibilities.
Established in 1908 as a board-governed, public institution, the University of Alberta has earned the reputation of being one of the best universities in Canada based on our strengths in teaching, research, and services.
