The Society for Theatre Research Theatre Book Prize for 2000

The short list for the Theatre Book Prize has now been announced (15 mars 2001). It is (in alphabetical order):
- Illegitimate Theatre in London 1770-1840 by Jane Moody, published by Cambridge University Press;
- On Actors and Acting by Peter Thomson, published by Exeter University Press;
- Politics Prudery and Perversion..... Censorship 1906-68 by Nicholas de Jongh, published by Methuen;
- Rehearsal from Shakespeare to Sheridan by Tiffany Stern, published by Oxford University Press;
- Staging in Shakespeare's Theatres by Andrew Gurr & Mariko Ichikawa, published by Oxford University Press.

The judges — Benedict Nightingale, theatre critic, Professor Kenneth Richards of Manchester University and impresario Thelma Holt — will declare the final winner on April 4th, when the prize will be presented at the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden, London by the Society's President, actor Timothy West before a gathering of the worlds of theatre and books.

The Theatre Book Prize was first awarded for 1997 to celebrate the Jubilee of the Society for Theatre Research. It was created not only to honour an author but to encourage the writing and publication of books on theatre history and practice, both those which present the theatre of the past and those which record contemporary theatre for the future.

It is now presented annually for the book on theatre which an independent panel of judges considers to be the best published during the year. All new works of original research first published in English are eligible but excluding play texts and studies of drama as literature.

Previous Prize Winners:
1997 The Life of Margaret Ramsay Play Agent by Colin Chambers : Nick Hern
1998 Threads of Time by Peter Brook : Methuen
1999 Garrick by Ian McIntyre : Allen Lane
