MA in Modern French Cultures

The main purpose of this taught MA is to explore the cultures of modern France and French-speaking countries, from 1850 to the present, focusing on a broad range of key themes and issues: identity, politics,inclusion/exclusion, crisis, visual culture, francophonie.

Programme:

Full-time students will take the following modules:

* In the first two terms, the compulsory research methods module [30 credits];
* In the first term, the compulsory team-taught core module that will introduce you to the theoretical framework of the course [30 credits];
* In the second term, you will choose one of the three optional modules from the list below, which will provide you with the opportunity to explore in greater depth and in a more specialised area of study questions arising from the core module [30 credits];
* In the third term, you will undertake a dissertation [90 credits], to be submitted by 15 September.

Part-time students may take the MA over two years, completing the research methods module, core module and an optional module in year I and the dissertation in year II.


Teaching:

The core module and optional modules will normally involve attendance (for each module) at six seminars (of 2 hours) and tutorial sessions (1 hour) per term. You will normally attend four tutorials (of 1 hour) for the dissertation. All modules will be team-taught.


Formative Assessment:

One 2,000-word essay and class presentations for each taught module.


Summative Assessment:

* One 5,000-word essay for the core module and each of the optional modules, unless otherwise stated. Assessment of the Research Methods module will be as prescribed by the School.
* Dissertation of 20,000 words.

Teaching and assessment will normally be in English, but French may be used for teaching and for the dissertation.
