This collection of essays celebrates an illustrious scholar whose wide-ranging publications on French literature, culture, language, and contemporary politics have met with international acclaim and awards. The particular achievement that is honored here is John Campbell's pioneering contribution to Racine studies, most notably in his Questioning Racinian Tragedy (2005), a work that embodies the very best of his scholarship: originality of approach, clarity and elegance of expression, a probing ability to ask questions where questions have not always been asked, or to pose apparently simple questions that are then shown to require subtle and complex answers. Thanks to Questioning Racinian Tragedy, to think of Racine is also to think automatically of John Campbell.
