Alterities: Self and Other in Sixteenth-Century France

The seventh Renaissance colloquium to be held under the aegis of the French Department of the University of Cambridge will this time be devoted to the question of alterity in the French Renaissance. It will again be held in Clare College, between 7 and 9 July 2001.

The main aim of the colloquium is to explore different aspects of the question of alterity in sixteenth-century France. The themes which we hope to cover include chronological alterity, focusing on the perceived difference by early humanists between the 'Renaissance' and the middle ages; geographical and ethnographical difference: France and the New World, but also the Orient and Africa; gender, particularly the question of the position of women in French society and their own perception of men, but also the question of homosexuality; linguistic, notably the question of neo-Latin and the vernacular, and its impact on French nationalism; and religious, focusing on the representation of Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Moslems, and others.

Those so far expected to give papers are Cathleen BAUSCHATZ, Emily BUTTERWORTH, George HOFFMANN, Julia HORN, Mireille HUCHON, Frank LESTRINGANT, Mary MCKINLEY, Ann MOSS, Paul SCOTT, André TOURNON, and Wes WILLIAMS.

As part of the Colloquium, we hope to arrange a concert of Renaissance music.

Accommodation will be available in Clare College at a cost of between £29.50 and £39.50 per night for bed and breakfast (in standard or en-suite rooms), and lunch and dinner will also be available. Non-residents will be very welcome to attend papers and take meals. There will be a Colloquium fee of £15.00 for those attending, whether resident or non-resident (£7.50 for graduate students and the retired).

If you are interested in attending the Colloquium, would you please fill in the tear-off slip below and return it, together with the appropriate Colloquium fee made payable to Cambridge French Colloquia, to Dr Philip Ford, Clare College, Cambridge CB2 1TL.
